McKinney Given Key to the Sarasota,
City Names Day After Her

(Sarasota, FL) - Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney was in Florida for the Sarasota Film Festival on April 14th, 2006.  During her visit she received the key to the city of Sarasota, FL and was doubly honored when the City named April 8th as "Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney Day" in Sarasota.  McKinney was present for a screening of the film "American Blackout," which documents her experiences of being de-elected and re-elected.

 

THE CITY OF SARASOTA PROCLAMATION

 

WHEREAS, Cynthia McKinney, Georgia's first African-American Congresswoman and the only woman serving in the state's congressional delegation, has emerged as an internationally renowned advocate for pece, an outspoken leader for human rights, and a determined worker for justice; and

 

WHEREAS, Cynthia McKinney represents Georgia's Fourth District, which comprises parts of DeKalb and Gwinnett Counties, two of the most ethnically diverse and populous counties in the fifteen county metropolitan Atlanta area; and

 

WHEREAS, Cynthia McKinney is an advocate of veterans affairs, co-sponsoring legislation to promote veterans' health care and to grant work opportunity credits to employers who hire veterans and also introduced a resolution to reaffirm the 1878 Posse Comitatus Act that protects the distinction between civilian and military policing; and

 

WHEREAS, Cynthia McKinney, throughout her terms, currently sits on the Armed Services Committee and the Budget Committee and has been a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, the Progressive Caucus, and has worked closely with the Hispanic Caucus and the newly formed Tri-Caucus advocating and legislating for civil rights and the environment.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, the City Commission of the City of Sarasota, Florida, and on behalf of the citizens of our community, takes great pride in recognizing April 8, 2006, as

 

"CONGRESSWOMAN CYNTHIA McKINNEY DAY"

 

a day of special importance and worthy of the recognition of the citizens of the City of Sarasota.

 

IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Sarasota to be affixed this 8th day of April 2006.
